Profile

An attacking, diminutive opener, Swapnil Asnodkar has been one of Goa's leading run-getters. The 2007-08 Ranji season was his best - he scored 640 runs at 71.11 with a personal best of 254 not out, against Railways. However, his feats went largely unrecognised, with Goa featuring regularly in the Plate League. He shot to prominence in the IPL, where his fearless style evoked memories of Sri Lanka's Romesh Kaluwitharana and won the praise of his captain Shane Warne.

2007-10-28 Day 4: Namibia makes winning start to its ICC Intercontinental Cup campaign
Namibia 480 for 9 dec (B Kotze 163*) and 102 for 2 (Burger 44*, Snyman 38*) beat Canada 286 (Iqbal 140) and 295 (Iqbal 88, Snyman 3-53) by 8 wickets. Namibia made a winning start to its ICC Intercontinental Cup campaign with a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Canada at Wanderers Cricket Club in Windhoek, Namibia on Sunday. Chasing a modest target of 102 runs in more than two sessions on the fourth and final day, the home side achieved victory midway through the second session for the loss of just two wickets. 2007-10-26 Day 2: Kotze and Iqbal trade maiden centuries in ICC Intercontinental Cup match in Windhoek
Namibia 480 for 9 declared (B Kotze 163, Scholtz 64, Soraine 3-74) v Canada 233 for 4 (M Iqbal 119, L Klazinga 2-16) Opener Mohammad Iqbal stroked a maiden first-class century to lead Canada's fight back against Namibia in the ICC Intercontinental Cup match at Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek, Namibia on Friday. Iqbal, playing his 18th first-class match, was undefeated on 119 as the visitors finished the second day's play at 233-4 after Bjorn Kotze's undefeated career-best 163 helped Namibia to declare its first innings at 480-9. Canada requires another 48 runs to avoid the follow-on. [More] [Live Scorecard]
2007-10-25 Day 1: Career-best knocks by captain Kotze and Scholtz give Namibia good start against Canada
Namibia 314 for 6 (B Kotze 87*, Scholtz 64, Verwey 49*, Soraine 3-54) v Canada Captain Bjorn Kotze and Nicholaas Scholtz achieved personal bests to provide Namibia with a positive start to its ICC Intercontinental Cup campaign against Canada at Wanderers Cricket Stadium in Windhoek, Namibia on Thursday. Kotze was undefeated on 87 and Scholtz scored 64, his maiden first-class half century, as the home team finished the opening day's play at 314-6 after electing to bat first. [More] [Live Scorecard]
2007-10-24 Canada's batsmen come up trumps
Canada 274 for 4 (Qaiser Ali 73, Kandappah 62*, Dhaniram 58*) beat Namibia 271 for 5 (Williams 132) by six wickets. Cricinfo - Canada's batsmen carried them to a six-wicket win over Namibia A in a warm-up match in Windhoek. What will worry the Canadians is that none of their bowlers were able to keep the Namibians in check. Craig Williams, a 23-year-old with a first-class average of 112, was the mainstay of the innings with 132 and with the exception of 17-year-old Sean Silver, who fell for 5 in the fifth over, all of the batsmen made reasonable contributions. Canada lost Aftab Shamsudeen, run out three balls into their reply, and then Abul Jabbar for a six-ball 14, but thereafter they batted sensibly in what was a well-paced chase. Trevin Bastiampillai and Qaiser Ali put them ahead of the clock and then some all-out attack by the veteran pairing of Arvind Kandappah and Sunil Dhaniram steered them home with six overs to spare. [Scorecard]
2007-10-20 2nd ODI: Obanda leads Kenya chase
Toss won by Canada, who chose to bat first. Canada 189 (47.1 ov) (TC Bastiampillai - 49;SO Tikolo 4/40), Kenya 193/6 (43.1 ov) (A Obanda 85). Kenya wins by 6 wickets. A fine 85 from Alex Obanda, playing in only his second one-dayer, led Kenya to a thumping win over Canada in the second and final ODI at Nairobi. Chasing a modest 190, Kenya rollicked to victory with more than six overs to spare. It was not all plain sailing though. In cool conditions and under cloudy skies, Kenya's top-order struggled with the early loss of Maurice Ouma and Nehemiah Odhiambo. David Obuya (34 from 51) helped put on 41 with Obanda, crunching five fours, before he fell attempting his sixth slog and was caught at deep midwicket off Qaiser Ali. Kenya wins the 2-match series 2-0. [More] [Scorecard]
2007-10-18 1st ODI: Odoyo century leads remarkable chase
Kenya 233 for 6 (Odoyo 111*, Bhatti 3-19) beat Canada 230 (Kandappah 69*, Onyango 3-29) by four wickets. CricInfo - Thomas Odoyo's maiden ODI century led a remarkable Kenya fightback in the opening match of their short series against Canada in Nairobi. He came in with the home side in tatters at 49 for 5 chasing 231, but calmly set about a recovery before taking the game away from Canada with a flurry of boundaries alongside a composed Jimmy Kamande who helped add a match-winning stand of 98 in 13 overs. [More] [Scorecard]
2007-10-14 Day 3: Tikolo and Ouma lead Canada rout
Kenya 393 (Odoyo 103*, Bhatti 5-75) and 105 for 1 (Ouma 71*) beat Canada 263 and 229 (Kandappah 87, Bastiampillai 63, Tikolo 4-34) by nine wickets. CricInfo - Kenya opened their Intercontinental Cup campaign with a commanding nine-wicket win against Canada to take maximum points with a day to spare in Nairobi. Steve Tikolo claimed four wickets to leave Kenya chasing 100 for victory and they cruised home as Maurice Ouma helped himself to an unbeaten 68-ball 71. Canada began the day facing a first-innings deficit of 130, following Thomas Odoyo's maiden first-class century on Saturday, and were in immediate trouble as Peter Ongondo removed both openers in the first over. Their main resistance came from a third-wicket stand of 113 between Trevin Bastiampillai (63) and 36-year-old debutant Arvind Kandappah (87). As they pushed Canada into a narrow lead there was a chance Kenya could be set a challenging target, but the home side stuck to their task. 2007-10-13 Day 2: Odoyo's maiden hundred puts Kenya in the driving seat
Day 2 Score: Canada 263 trail Kenya 393 (107.5 ov) by 130 runs. A maiden first-class hundred by Thomas Odoyo has helped Kenya secure a healthy first innings lead after two days of its ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Canada in Nairobi. Odoyo hit 14 fours and a six in an unbeaten 103 as the home side, responding to the visitor's opening effort of 263, was dismissed for 393 at Gymkhana Club Ground on Saturday. The 29 year-old all-rounder, who earlier this year was named as the ICC Associate ODI Player of the Year, showed he was equally at home in the longer form of the game as he shepherded Kenya's lower order in impressive fashion. 2007-10-12 Day 1: Dhaniram and Bhatti lead the way for Canada
Day 1 Score: Kenya 8 for 1 trail Canada 263 (Dhaniram 78, Bhatti 57, Kamande 4-56) by 255 runs . A captain's knock from Sunil Dhaniram gave Canada a fighting chance on day one of its ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Kenya in Nairobi. With his side struggling on 121-6, all-rounder Dhaniram was joined at the crease by number eight batsman Umar Bhatti and, as they have done many times before for their country, they frustrated the bowling and showed they are more than capable of scoring runs at this level. The pair put on 99 for the seventh wicket with Dhaniram eventually being dismissed for a crucial 78. Bhatti didn't stop there, however, and with Durand Soraine, he put on another 40 runs, making a classy half-century and making sure Canada ended up with 263 all out. [More] [CricInfo Live Scorecard]
2007-10-11 Canada off to a winning start
CricInfo - Canada 203 beat Kenya A 193 by ten runs. Canada got their tour of Africa off to a winning start with a 10-run victory over Kenya A at Ruaraka Sports Club. Canada were stuck in by the Kenyans and struggled throughout their innings, with none of their batsmen able to go on and make a decent score as they ended on 203. Moses Otieno and Dominic Wesonga shared three wickets while Ashif Mulla top scored with 36. Kenya started solidly to reach 67 for 1 but lost regular wickets and fell short. With Canada set to meet the full Kenyan side in the Intercontinental Cup later this week, Steve Tikolo, the captain, said his side were ready. "The team is alright and we have been in intensive training for three weeks where we have worked on rectifying our mistakes," he told The Standard. "We believe we will put a good performance to lay a platform to reach the Intercontinental Cup final next year as well as prepare for the next World Cup." 2007-09-04 CCA Letter to John Tory
Dear Mr. Tory: It is estimated that some 6 million Canadians are avid fans of the beautiful sport of CRICKET. Great majority of them reside in Ontario. To a cricket fan the game is not merely a passion but it is a religion. For your upcoming Election Campaign you have chosen to make ?Cricket? as a theme to illustrate the alleged misdoings of your opponents. With the Elections looming, political jockeying is very much the name of the game. On the other hand it is equally important for the politicians that whatever information they are giving out to the public has been conscientiously researched and truthfully presented. [More]

Kenya moved to the top of the ICC Intercontinental Cup table as it completed a comfortable eight-wicket win over Bermuda in Nairobi.Chasing 158 for victory and resuming at 79 without loss, openers Maurice Ouma (63) and David Obuya (70) took Kenya to within touching distance of the winning post with a stand of 107.And although both men were dismissed before success was achieved, Tony Suji (13 not out) and Collins Obuya (14 not out) completed the formalities as the home side finished at 161-2.Off-spinner Rodney Trott (1-36), one of the players that helped Bermuda qualify for next year’s ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia, bowled David Obuya after the batsman struck five fours and a six from 107 deliveries faced. The other wicket was claimed by another youngster, seamer Malachi Jones (1-22), who had Ouma caught by substitute fielder Kyle Hodsoll.Ouma added just 14 to his overnight score, but his innings, including eight fours and two sixes from just 67 balls, set the tone for his side’s comfortable march to victory. It took Kenya just 21.1 overs to knock off the remaining runs it required for victory on the final morning and in so doing it recorded its second successive win in the competition, having beaten Canada by nine wickets last month, also in Nairobi. The win places Steve Tikolo’s side six points clear of second-placed side the Netherlands in the eight-team first-class event for the leading Associate line-ups.Kenya still has five of its matches to play in the round-robin format but finishing as one of the top two sides is essential as only those two teams will go forward to play in next year’s final.Defending champion Ireland lies third in the ladder, five points behind the Dutch but three points ahead of Canada – which has played four matches, more than any other side so far.Scotland is level on points with Canada, Namibia is in sixth place with 20 points from a victory over the Canadians in the one match it has played so far, and the United Arab Emirates lies seventh with three points from a rain-ruined draw with the Scots. As for Bermuda, the loss means it has now failed to secure any points from three fixtures as it has also been defeated by the Netherlands and defending champions Ireland. The one crumb of comfort for the side coached by former West Indies batsman Gus Logie is that it showed itself to be far more competitive in this outing compared to the previous two games, which were both lost by an innings. That will be something positive for the players to take into their next encounter, against the United Arab Emirates in Sharjah starting on 8 November. That match will be the last in the tournament in 2007 with the remaining games to be played next year ahead of the final, which will take place at a date and location to be confirmed.

Zimbabwean Cricket

Zimbabwe Cricket Team

‘Cricket is a Gentlemen’s game’, it is a popular phrase and signifies the character of everyone involved with the game of cricket. However, it is no harm to signify Zimbabwean Cricket Team as the ‘Boys of the Cricketing World’. Do not let the term mislead you. The composition of Zimbabwean team involves mostly young players who are very much inexperienced at this level. However, they bring another enthusiasm to the game. The celebration that the players have, with the fall of a wicket and a victory being scored, is simply a moment that should be caught in a camera and savored for a long time.

History of Zimbabwe Cricket Union

Zimbabwean Team had the first taste of international Cricket in the third edition of the World Cup of Cricket (1983) in England. David Vs Goliath was the term given to their first encounter against Australia and eventually the result matched the primitive outcome. Zimbabwe scored a victory to remember for ages in their first game. They almost repeated the performance against India in the same edition (which was won by India), however, India scrapped through. They had reasonable outing in the World Cups of 1983, 1987 and 1982, and outstanding performances in matches with the minnow teams before finally getting the test status in the year 1992 against the mighty Indians at the Harare Sports Club. They did well to secure a draw in that game. History of Zimbabwean Cricket, although it has been short, has seen some world class cricketers including Dave Houghton, Kevin Curran, Andy Flower, Grant Flower, Heath streak, etc.

Past Performances

Performances of the Zimbabwean Cricket team have been creditable in their short tenure in the world of Cricket. They had a very average but a fighting unit till 2003 World Cup that knew their limitations and performed accordingly. Alistair Campbell, their most successful captain, in his tenure defeated teams like India, Pakistan, England, Srilanka, New Zealand, etc. in their backyard. Flower brothers (Andy and Grant) were reckoned amongst the best batsman of their era. They have won matches for the team and gave performances that were to be desired for a long time. Their performance in the 1999 World Cup where they beat the likes of South Africa and India and eventually reached the Super Six stage is still considered their memorable moment. They repeated the same performance in 2003 World Cup. However, the guile and finesse they had in that edition was not there. 2007 World Cup was not fruitful for them as they faltered in the first round. They have so far won 8 tests and 79 One Day Internationals.

Dark Period of Zimbabwean Cricket

Zimbabwe Cricket team has seen a slump since the events that took place during the 2003 World Cup that saw Henry Olonga and Andy Flower wear black arm bands during the event and leave the side. The team has lost many valuable players since then for contract rows and now they are left with a bunch of inexperienced young lot. Their performances have also gone down in the past three years with them loosing a lot of matches against minnows like Kenya and Bangladesh. They have not played a test for two years now. There were even talks of stripping them of test status till their political row was over. However, it is expected that under the guidance of Coach Kevin Curran and Captain Prosper Utseya, they will get back the respect that they have lost. The youth and exuberant players of Zimbabwe are getting ready to take on the Big Boys of world cricket yet aga

Scotland Cricket Team

Scotland Cricket Team

The Scotland Cricket is also known as Scotland national cricket team that represents Scotland in the game of cricket at an international level. Scotland was elected to associate membership of the ICC in the year 1994. This was done after having cut-off their cricketing links with England cricket team two years earlier. Though they qualified in the Cricket World Cup in the year 1999, they lost all their five matches. Added to this, the team was not qualified in the 2003 World Cup tournament.

In the year 2004, Scotland team competed in the inaugural ICC Intercontinental Cup. The team played with Ireland and then Netherlands. They progressed furthermore to semi-finals in Sharjah. They defeated Kenya in the semi-final. The progress was interrupted when they failed to pass the first round in the tournament held in the year 2005.

They got qualified for the semi-finals of the 2005 International Cricket Council Trophy in the month of July and year of 2005. Scotland gained One Day International status from January 1st, 2006 to the next ICC World Cup Qualifier in the coming year 2009. Scotland played their first ever One Day International outside of World Cups against Pakistan in the month of June, 2006.

The current status

In the month of March, 2006 Scotland embarks on a pre-season tour to Barbados. They won only one game out of six games against Barbados XI, but they build some credit with the style of playing the game. The success would go to Dougie Brown, a person who re-qualified to represent the Scotland team internationally in the year of 2004. Scotland also competed in the C & G Trophy in English Domestic Cricket in early year of 2006 English Cricket Season. They won three out of their nine games and this time they really performed better than expected. They finished eight in the Northern conference.

After 1999 World Cup, they played their first ODI against Pakistan in Edinburgh. They lost by five wickets without their key players like Navdeep Poonia and Dougie Brown. They finally succeed beating Netherlands in European Championships in August in a match, which was rain-shortened.

Throughout the year of 2006 and into early 2007, Scotland took part in the Intercontinental Cup. They defeated Namibia in May and tried to manage draw against Ireland in August. They also did draw game against UAE in the year 2007 and could not reach final. In the later part of 2006, they toured Bangladesh for their first ODI series outside UK and lost both the matches against Bangladesh.

In January 2007, they toured Kenya after the Intercontinental Cup. They first played in tri-series against Canada and Kenya in Mombassa and they finished well by standing in second position. In the last World Cup in recently, their touring to West Indies did not bring fruitful results as they lost all the matches and did not reach beyond their first round. In UK, they competed in the Friends Provident Trophy and won against Lancashire giving some relief to the great defeat in the World Cup.

Namibia announce squad to face Canada

Namibia have announced their squad for the Intercontinental Cup match at home against Canada in November. Although some teams, including Canada, have played three matches, this match will be Namibia's opening match of the campaign.

They are due to play a further six matches in the competition that was revamped to a round robin format this year, but these fixtures have not yet been released.

The13-man squad includes three of the under-19 side which unexpectedly qualified for the next World Cup - Morne Engelbrecht, Ray van Schoor and Ewald Steenkamp.

The four-day match starts on November 25. Engelbrecht and van Schoor had a chance to see what Canada are like, when they, along with fellow squad members Wibur Slabber and Michael Durandt, played for Namibia A in a 50-over warm-up match at Windhoek on Wednesday.

Canada won that match easily, by six wickets, but they won't be expecting an easy time of it against the full side next month. In the Intercontinental Cup, Canada have so far won one and lost two, and the squad they have in Africa at the moment is far from their first-choice side.

Squad J.B. Burger, Raymond van Schoor, Bjorn Kotzé (capt), Gerrie Snyman, Michel Durandt, Nicolaas Scholtz, Tobie Verwey, Ian van Zyl, Kola Burger, Louis Klazinga, Wilber Slabber, Morné Engelbrecht, Ewald Steenkamp.

Canada's batsmen come up trumps

Canada 274 for 4 (Qaiser Ali 73, Kandappah 62*, Dhaniram 58*) beat Namibia 271 for 5 (Williams 132) by six wickets
Scorecard

Canada's batsmen carried them to a six-wicket win over Namibia A in a warm-up match in Windhoek.

Kenya coach delighted with win and performance in difficult ICC Intercontinental Cup victory over Canada

Brian Murgatroyd

October 15, 2007

Kenya's interim coach Alfred Boi Njuguna has hailed his team's performance in a difficult ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Canada and has urged his boys to maintain the same standards in the upcoming matches.

Kenya put behind it the let-down of two sub-standard displays at September's ICC World Twenty20 by brushing aside Canada by nine wickets in Nairobi inside three days to collect a maximum 20 points in its tournament opener.

And reflecting on the success, Njuguna said: "It was an important game for the team for more than one reason and I am delighted that it shrugged aside everything to put up a performance which can make any coach proud.

"While we were keen to put up a good performance in the longer version of the game, it was a difficult match for the team as it went without the influential figure of Roger Harper whose presence was always felt in the dressing room.

"Also, we were determined to avenge for last year's 25-run defeat against Canada in Canada and I am glad that the boys came good to show that they were mentally tough besides begin highly talented," Njuguna said.

After Canada won the toss and elected to bat first, Kenya did well to bowl the visitors out for 263, thanks to off-spinner Jimmy Kamande's 4-56. Then Thomas Odoyo, who earlier this year was named as the ICC Associate ODI Player of the Year, led the home team's reply by stroking a maiden first-class century that steered Kenya to 393.

Canada, which went into this match after routing the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by a thumping margin of an innings and 228 runs in July, failed to break Kenya's domination in the second innings when it was bowled out for 229 with the home side's captain Steve Tikolo picking up 4-34. The rampant Kenyans then took just 20.2 overs to race to the 100-run target to conjure up a comfortable victory.

Njuguna said his team made victory appear straightforward because of solid tactics and execution. "Familiar home conditions gave us an advantage but we made victory look easy because we stuck to the game plan which was to bowl as straight as possible and bat as long as possible.

"It was a flat wicket and the only way we could get 20 wickets to win the match was by forcing the batsmen into mistakes by making them play. At the same time, we knew that if we succeeded in occupying the crease, the runs would come."

Njuguna was full of praise for Odoyo and 19-year-old Alex Obanda. "There couldn't have been a better occasion for Odoyo to take the responsibility and score his maiden first-class century," he said.

"It was a quality innings that showed his promise and potential.

"I was also pleased with the temperament and stroke selection of Obanda. I think his innings of 83 from 70 balls was important because it gave the team momentum for a substantial first innings score. This boy has a bright future," he added.

The Kenya coach agreed that a winning start had given his team a good confidence booster and hoped his team would also succeed in pocketing another 20 points when it faces Bermuda in the familiar Nairobi Gymkhana conditions from 1 to 4 November.

"We have set good standards for ourselves but to maintain that we will have to work harder," he said.

"I have reminded my boys not to get complacent or not to get carried away by the fact that Bermuda is a lowly-placed team.

"Our objective is to be the top Associate country and we can only achieve that by rigorous training and continuous hard work.

"Obviously, we will target for maximum points against Bermuda which will put us in a very good position in this tournament. All we need to do is to believe in ourselves, stick to basics and cash in on whatever opportunity that comes our way," Njuguna said.

Canada's highlights in the match were excellent half centuries by captain Sunil Dhaniram (78), 36-year-old debutant Arvind Kandappah (87) and Trevin Bastiampillai (63), a sound all-round performance by left-armer Umar Bhatti (57 and 5-75) and good bowling by spinner Qaiser Ali (4-61).

Canada faces Namibia in its fourth match of this edition of the tournament at the Wanderers Cricket Ground, Windhoek from 25 to 28 October.

The ICC Intercontinental Cup has quickly grown in stature and profile since its inception three years ago and now ICC's premier first-class tournament is an integral part of the Associate Members' cricket schedule.

Having previously been designed around a two-group, three-day format, the event has evolved into an eight-team, round-robin and truly global tournament featuring four-day cricket which gives those teams who do not play Test cricket the chance to experience the longer form of the game.

Scotland won the first ICC Intercontinental Cup in 2004, beating Canada in the final, while Ireland has been victorious in both events since then, beating Kenya in the 2005 decider and Canada earlier this year in the 2006/07 event.

The final of the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2007/08 will take place in November 2008 at a venue yet to be decided.

Canada off to a winning start

"We believe we will put a good performance to lay a platform to reach the Intercontinental Cup final next year as well as prepare for the next World Cup."
