inzamam retires

Inzamam is without doubt one of the best batsmen ever to represent Pakistan in the international arena, he started his one day career back in 1991 when Pakistan played West Indies at Lahore in 1991 and his test career from Birmingham against the English in 1992. Its been well over 16 years of back to back cricket for this humble giant which naturally had their own highs and lows.

The highlight of his career even by his own admission was the 1992 world cup victory where people fondly remember the 60 runs he made vs New Zealand, during the 1992 World Cup semi-final which Pakistan won by four wickets. Who can forget the majestic 329 he made yet again vs New Zealand at Lahore, 2002. or his 122 vs India, Karachi, 2004, though India won by five runs Inzamam out-batted the world’s best batting line-up facing the mammoth total of 350.

His performance in the sign-off Test wasn’t what he would have wanted it to be, the 17 runs in his 120th and final Test not only left Inzamam - who finished with a Test aggregate of 8830 - two runs short of equaling Javed Miandad as Pakistan’s leading run-getter in Tests, but also brought his career batting average down to 49.60, marginally below the 50-mark.

There are tons of statistics available on his cricketing career which can be found here but I choose to dive in a little further to cook out some interesting aspects which I found about his ODI career

The best part about his retirement test is the fact that he finally spoke in Urdu and addressed his passionate cricket fans, which was a treat considering the fact that throughout his career he had always given his interviews in English which was definitely not his domain.

I wish Inzamam all the best in life as he has truly served Pakistan to our satisfaction. I am proud to have been a passionate spectator during his tenure and have throughly enjoyed his cricket style.

A final hat tip to the gentle giant called Inzamam-ul-Haq
